The best new change is the massive destruction element that has been added to the game. Players will undoubtedly have their favorites. Each car handles a bit differently, so mastering all of them takes time and patience. Some are faster, others are better at drifting, while others still are great for plowing through your opponents. Players have a wide selection of cars from which to choose, each with its unique strengths and weaknesses. Taking place in the fictional city of Shatter Bay, the overall game looks great. It may say "Ridge Racer" on the box, but once you open it, you get a totally different gaming experience. Taking the developing wheel this time around is the Finnish developer Bugbear, and it's clear they had their way with this installment. "Ridge Racer Unbounded" is another great entry into the famed racer series, but it's also a major departure from what fans are used to. It’s almost better to avoid causing destruction altogether and reduce the risk of a crash. The "Ridge Racer" series has seen many changes since its humble PlayStation beginnings. So some chest-high brick walls and concrete columns can be barreled through, but other walls and obstacles that look exactly the same, could just as easily end your race. In fact, it’s sometimes a problem – there’s no indication of what objects are destructible. There’s also nothing here the can come close to the sheer scale of Split Second’s finer moments. However it’s not used to any great effect – the best you can do is take a few minor shortcuts, so it’s all rather uninvolving and doesn’t provide much use. From Split Second, the game borrows the presentation elements and environmental destruction. Sadly, all of the elements that are borrowed from those good titles are largely bare-bones here, awkwardly mashed together to create a barely functioning title that’s often difficult to enjoy. The core experience plays out like a mix between Split Second and Burnout, with some FlatOut added to the mix. Unbounded seems full of seemingly unfinished design.
